A little history

The “spirit of exploration” is a carefully designed play on words intended to make you purchase high end liquor. Bombay ad execs are thrilled with it as a tag line, because Gin is a spirit and spirit also means your attitude (see how that works).

Other notes: Bombay is a place in India, but the gin is made by Bacardi and the name was part of a 1987 naming contest between Madison Avenue advertising companies (Wiki has no citation for this, but I believe it anyway). For those of you keeping track at home, we’ve been to India and NY.

So what is the spirit of exploration, really?

To find out, I poured myself a stiff one, strapped on my conquistador helmet and headed to my couch where I promptly took a nap.

Ok that’s a lie. I actually surfed the internet and left rambling incoherent comments on TMZ posts. “Britney isn’t a bad mother!” You get the idea.

But then I remembered besides being a spirit, Bombay has some other stuff in it too. Like almonds which are native to Iran and lemons which originated in either India or China (or both!) and grains of paradise from West Africa. Also did you know that juniper berries were found in early Egyptian tombs? Piney fresh!

Still following? India, NY, Iran, China, West Africa and Egypt.

Digging deeper (I.e. more drinks)

Next I pour myself another drink (natch) and quickly remembered that this piece is probably supposed to talk about the actual “spirit of exploration” and being the blogger that I am, I searched online for ideas I could steal. I mean regurgitate… um no, get inspired by. Unfortunately the term “spirit of exploration” has been commandeered by NASA as they think going to the moon is both spirited and explory. Yawn. We get it NASA, it’s in “space” whatever that means.

Well at least my list is getting longer: India, NY, Iran, China, West Africa, Egypt and the moon.

Famous explorers (that I found on google)

I’m drinking water now, because that’s the responsible thing to do. See Bombay, this story has a moral. Anyway, to round out this captivating tale, I asked Lord Google for some names. Any names. Here we go: Edmund Hillary who climbed Mt. Everest and Jacques Cousteau who went under water a lot, and Marco Polo who invented a game millions of kids play in pee-contaminated pools all over the world.

So there you have it. We’ve discovered the spirit of exploration and seen the some interesting places: India, NY, Iran, China, West Africa, Egypt, Tibet, the ocean, and the world.
